How it works
- Choose a photograph. Search any place or SW number in our catalogue.
- Enter your wall. Width and height in centimetres. The preview shows the photograph on your wall and the price updates as you type.
- Check the fit. We centre the photograph on your wall. Turn on Show strips to see where the joins fall. Want a different part of the photograph? Add a note in the cart.
- Approve the proof. We set the image up for your wall and email you the crop. If a photograph won't hold at your size, we'll say so and suggest one that will. Nothing prints until you say yes.
- We print and send it. Printed in North Perth, rolled in strips, shipped free within Australia.
How to measure
Measure the full width and height of the wall, then add 5cm to each. We print to your numbers, and the extra gives you room to trim a clean edge at the ceiling, floor and corners.
A plain wall
Measure the width and the height of the whole wall. Measure twice. Walls are rarely perfectly square, so use the largest figure for each.
Doors, windows and power points
Measure the wall as if they weren't there. They are cut out with a sharp blade once the wallpaper is up.
Sloped ceilings
Measure at the widest and tallest points. The wallpaper prints as a rectangle and the slope is trimmed on the wall.
Around a corner
Add the widths of both walls together, plus 5cm for each wall, and use the tallest height. It prints as one continuous image that wraps the corner.
Stairwells
Measure the full height from the lowest step to the highest point of the wall, and the full width. It prints as a rectangle and the angled edge is trimmed along the stairs.
Not sure? Send a photo of the wall with your measurements to prints@saltywings.com.au and we'll check it before you order.
Installation
The wallpaper comes pre-pasted, so there's no glue to mix. Most people hang it themselves in an afternoon. A wallpaper hanger will do it faster.
It arrives in strips about 60cm wide, rolled together. Each strip overlaps the next by 2cm.
You'll need
- Bucket of water
- Sponge
- Smoothing brush
- Spirit level
- Pencil
- Sharp blade
- Straight edge
- Tape measure
Before you start
- Smooth, clean and dry. Fill holes and sand any bumps. Anything on the wall shows through.
- Let fresh paint cure. Give newly painted walls a few weeks before hanging.
- Light, even base. A strong colour under the wallpaper can show through. A coat of white or a primer fixes it.
- Unroll and check. Lay the strips out in order and check nothing is damaged before you start.
Hanging it
- Mark a straight line. Measure one strip width in from the left corner and draw a faint vertical line with the spirit level. Hang the first strip to this line, not to the corner. Corners are rarely straight.
- Wet the back. Wet the back of the first strip evenly with a damp sponge to activate the paste.
- Hang from the top. Leave a little extra at the ceiling, line the edge up with your mark and smooth from the centre out with the brush to push out air.
- Hang the rest, left to right. Overlap each strip by 2cm and line the photograph up across the join before you smooth it down.
- Wipe as you go. Wipe any paste off the front with a clean damp sponge. Don't rub.
- Trim. Run a sharp blade along a straight edge at the ceiling, skirting and around power points and windows. Change blades often for a clean cut.
Let it dry
Small bubbles usually settle as it dries. Keep the room at a steady temperature, away from heaters, until it's fully dry.
The wallpaper
HP wallpaper, printed with water-based HP Latex inks by Fitzgerald Photo Imaging in North Perth. The same family-run lab prints every Salty Wings print.
No chemical smell, so it suits bedrooms and kids' rooms as well as studios, offices and cafes.
Pre-pasted, so hanging takes a bucket of water rather than a bucket of glue.
